Does allowing individual freedom harm or help society?
Romantic individualism allows for society to change and flow freely, but there are limits that prevent it from fully embraced.
Image 1: Edward Sapir was an American linguist and anthropologist who often sided with traditional societal values. Richard Handler's analysis shows that Sapir's idea of genuine culture determines that cultural context must be adhered when examining individual experience and creativity.
Image 2: I. J. Kapsein's analysis of Percy Bysshe Shelley determines that Shelley desires a cycle of death and rebirth within society. The central symbols, the wind and the leaves, represent hope and decay respectively. Kapstein seeks to show the connection between Shelley's writings and events in his personal life that the poem points to.
Individualism allows society to flourish by letting people do what they want to do and prioritize their own wellbeing, improving the overall mental health of the population. Social norms hold back individual thought. For individualism to be fully realized, a social rebirth is required to reform society. A more diverse population is more vibrant and fosters creativity.
Social conformity is thought of as more efficient as the populous does whatever job is most needed rather than what they desire. Humans naturally will follow orders and the example of those around them, so it doesn't really hurt to stifle individualism when there are alternative outlets. Individualism can lead to delusions of grandeur.
